Writing an SEO-friendly meta description

Google truncates meta descriptions past a certain length — count characters to keep it in the ideal range before publishing.

Keeping an essay or report within a word limit

Assignments with a minimum or maximum word count — check before you submit to make sure you're within range.

Estimating how long an article takes to read

Writing a blog post and want to know roughly how many minutes it takes to read, to plan the right content length.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How accurate is the word count?
This tool counts "groups of characters separated by whitespace," which is accurate for languages like English that always put a space between words. For languages that are typically written without spaces between words (like Thai), the word count may group several words together as one unit rather than counting them individually — for those languages, the character count is a more reliable metric.
What is the estimated reading time based on?
It's calculated from an average adult reading speed of about 200 words per minute. This is only an estimate — actual reading speed varies by content difficulty and by reader.
Does the character count include spaces?
The tool shows both figures separately — characters with spaces and characters without spaces — so you can use whichever number matches the limit set by your assignment or platform, since some count spaces and some don't.
How are paragraphs and sentences counted?
Paragraphs are counted from blank lines separating blocks of text, and sentences are counted from sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?) in the text — a standard, common counting method. It can be slightly off for unusual punctuation, like abbreviations that include periods.
Is my text sent to a server or stored anywhere?
No data ever leaves your device. All word and character counting runs entirely in your browser.
